Blog 3: Phoenix
This is an art installation by a chinese artist called Xu Bing. This is "Phoenix" being displayed in Shanghai. Phoenix has the same symbolic representation in China, which is rebirth. China has been growing as a industrial country for the past decades, Xu Bing gathered construction materials to make tribute to them. I encourage you look into the detail of this work, but I want to focus about the placement of this art piece and how it affects my perception. By hanging it in the air, the picture hopes to create a sense of mighty feeling. The lighting gives shadow to the Phoenix. With the shadow, the Phenix appears to be expansive to me. Also notice the shade of blut at the back. The Phoenix head is towards to the whiter side of the blue. In my artistic interpretation, it seems like China has hope. China is heading to the brighter after all her hard work.
